JEWEL OF THE DAY

Thinking you won’t meet the one,

Many years ago in my twenties, Simone, the manager at the shrimp and oyster restaurant where I was employed, gathered together me and a few other employees she had known and worked with at previous restaurants. She informed us she had accepted a highly compensating corporate pursuit, so she would be leaving soon. She encouraged us to seek positions at other restaurants, higher up the gourmet scale, to increase our moderate income. During this era, the pay was a meager $2.01 + tips. Astonishing to me now, it has only increased to $3.63 today. This is one of the most emotionally demanding forms of employment invented on Earth.

As a sidenote, I would like to mention & I highly recommend one of my favorite take-to-the-beach reads and author Elin Hilderbrand, who is known as the Beach Queen! Elin captures the atmosphere, experiences, and turmoil of a restaurant employee’s experience well. The Blue Bistro is a phenomenal work of literature truly encapsulating that time period. I believe it is out of print, however if you ever run across an edition, don’t pass it up or let me know! It is no longer on Mobius at my library. I digress, following Simone’s inspirational pep talk, I had the forethought to ask her where these rare animals existed in the wild. Simone recommended several elegant gourmet restaurants, one of which was quietly hiding only a few blocks up the lane. I summoned my courage and strolled into the newly minted upscale bespoke two-level shopping center and meandered until I found the alcove bistro. It was actually quite exclusive and patronized by well-appointed lawyers and judges. Little did I know it was the beginning of my great love story.

Upon entering, my view focused on a young, extremely handsome gentleman behind the bar. Barely able to form words, by being struck by his innate beauty, a meet cute, if you will, I finally murmured my wish to apply for the server position. To my grand surprise, I was immediately hired by him and could begin the following Tuesday. He explained the bistro was closed on Sunday & Monday. I inquired if he would like to show me around… Where everything was, per se. He looked at me full force and replied with a sparkle in his eye, “It’s all right here.” Yes, years following we were married and held the reception in the bistro. So once again! Welcome, it’s all right here.
