I ate curry in Nepal

Truthfully it was a dream! My Siddhartha. I aspire to find meaning in my life abroad. When I see small round stone bracelets on daily passersby, I try to concoct which enchanting trip, to a faraway land did they acquire their adornment. To acquire such a treasure, I can easily picture myself in chunky leather fur lined boots and a beribboned parka with a sheepskin hood, wearing a Sanskrit silver bracelet . Stopping on a snowy, rocky plateau to make a cup of tea with my Sherpa Tashi (which by the way Tashi means good luck) who is explaining to me the differences in altitude of our present locale and ” The Mother of the World” or as we refer to her- Mount Everest. Many of the great Himalayan mountains are worshipped as Gods. “Mount Makalu” is worshipped as the deity Shankar (Shiva). Each clan recognizes their own mountain gods identified with certain peaks that are their protective deities. Like here in America we have Michael Jordan, Serena Williams, Simone Biles, Everette & King {now friends- both fighting breast cancer at one point (talk about game point)], and then we have John McEnroe, sometimes we adopt them like Bjorn Borg, or Carlos Alcaraz. We have fun ones like the Globetrotters, national ones like Steve Martin, Meryl (Meryl’s Dad made up her first name because her mother and grandmother were both named Mary) Streep, Judy Garland lest we forget Dick Van Dyke or Kelsey Grammer. Historical ones like Jim Thorpe & the Wright brothers but I digress.

After climbing in 30* below temperatures we make it to a wood structured two level Inn. My cozy small room with a small round stove and straw bed covered with a large fur is truly more than adequate. I go down to the tiny village and join people standing amongst a tall, large fire pit and am offered meat kabobs served atop a bowl of rice and vegetables, seasoned delicately & delectably. In the morning we begin our ascent of “The Mother Of The World” after thick coffee and bread. The snowfall is lite and pretty so far…

In reality (and just as momentous) my most treasured silver bracelet was a gift from a Hopi jewelry artist from Anadarko, Oklahoma. During the summers of my youth my mother a schoolteacher and my sisters would travel to Colorado for our vacation. Along the way we would stop in Anadarko and pick up the handmade Hopi jewelry and deliver it to small boutique retailers in different parts of Colorado thus paying for some of our trip. One summer one of the Hopi artists surprised, my sisters and I, with beautiful silver bracelets with symbolism he designed for each one of us. Such a magnanimous gift! Life is a treasured commodity in such genuine & beautiful surroundings. Or even at home eating dinner with my daughter playing Skip-Bo and watching Frasier. Life abroad, in my mind or at home is always interesting, surprising and priceless!
